Trails

The East Kootenay ATV Club, Columbia Valley division, does not maintain any ATV trails in the valley.

However, there are many B.C. Forestry Service Roads, old logging roads, skid trails, snowmobile and quad trails available
for your use. Make sure you have the proper insurance.

How do you find new trails to ride?

There are trails all over Crownland. If you are not familiar with the area you want to ride into,
you should first find some maps of the area. The problem is, trail maps are generally not available to purchase.

Therefore, you need to create your own maps like the maps below. Using the free software, once you have zoomed into the areas you want to see you, can easily print your own detailed trail maps.
Check out these samples.

Sample 1: MAP of Whitetail Lake (by B.C. Forestry Interactive Maps - see below)

Sample 2: MAP of Engstrom Pond (by B.C. Forestry Interactive Maps - see below)

Sample 3: MAP of White Swan Forestry Road (by Google Earth Maps - see below)

Sample 4: MAP of White Swan Forestry Road - Higher Zoom (by Google Earth Maps - see below)

Once you have your own maps, take a pen or pencil with you as you travel and mark your paper map with the trails you are on.
This will assist you in locating your position on your paper map and help prevent you from getting lost.

Good Luck!

Map Sources

To go to B.C. Interactive Maps website click on the logo to the left.

At the interactive map website you can zoom in on the areas that you are interested in. The more you zoom in, the more the detailed roads and trails show up. Once zoomed in enough, you will start seeing the gold coloured trails. Those trails are all the old logging and skid trails that BC Forestry had mapped out over the years. Most of those trails are still very good trails. Just watch out for and stay out of private land, etc when you are on the trails.

Zoom to the area you want to see, at the scale of detail you want to see and then click the PRINT icon on the website
and it will create you a PDF file. You can save the PDF to you computer and print the file. You now have your very own

Google Earth is another great tool. You will have to download and install Google Earth. You can get to the Google Earth download site location by clicking on the Google Earth logo to the left.

Once installed you can zoom around in Goolge and view actual trails. In many location the maps are clear enough to view trails and print out real photo style maps. Check out samples 3 and 4 above. They are both printed at different scale. Note the higher the zoom the more visible the trails are. This is a great map tool.

Just type in Invermere and start zooming around. Check it out!

Freehand Drawing Utility
GPS Visualizer Freehand Drawing Utility is also a great tool. You do not need to download or install any software. This mapping tool works right in your internet browser.

With GPS Visualizer you can zoom around and draw lines over the trials that you are interested in. You can then print the maps or if you have a uploadable GPS unit (like a Garmin Rino 120, 130 or 520) you can then upload the trails you drew right into your GPS unit.

Just type in Invermere and start zooming around. Check it out!
